We organize and develop a powerful community of parent leaders to ignite a movement that demands equitable community, health, education policies and practices for girls and children with disabilities.
Giving parents a voice
HOPE Africa gives those with a parenting role a voice to lead. Our children are brilliant and deserving of a world-class education. Our current health and education systems have failed generations of girls and children with disabilities so it’s up to us to change it. We are educating and equipping parents with the knowledge and tools to demand radical systemic change.
We engage and equip families and communities with the tools they need to represent parent views on their child’s learning to local, regional and national governments and agencies because evidence holds that parental participation in education benefits all children in all schools and society as a whole.
With the mission to bring together home and school, our vision is that parents should not only have a local role and a voice in their child’s school but also at a national level in education policy.
Through community engagements, fellowships, dialogues, workshops and masterclasses designed for all those responsible for parental participation, we support them with their school’s journey. We help parents and community partners to create a strategic and proactive approach and they walk away with practical and cost-effective ideas
Today family life is very different to 30 years ago and so is the education system. We have many different types of family structures and circumstances (the nuclear family, single parents, or two working parents, children with disabilities etc), much more disparate community support and a multitude of care arrangements for children around school. However, the vision remains the same; parents should not only have a local role and a voice in their child’s school but also at a national level in education policy.
For parents
We help parents navigate and have a voice in their child’s education and well-being.
For schools
We help schools to become more parent-friendly and build more effective relationships with parents through our resources and training.
For communities
We create partnerships with community members and leaders for systemic change aimed at reducing stigma and barriers against girls and children with disabilities.
Giving parents and communities a voice, to ensure that local, regional and national educational policy is built around parental participation.
Creating economic opportunities for women
We also work with communities to establish quality, affordable childcare and inclusive community primary schools. They offer mothers the freedom to work and create jobs for young women in remote areas who lack the opportunity to continue their education. Across many of our geographies, HOPE is working with stakeholders to increase economic opportunities for women while enabling families to support their children with disabilities.
In West Africa, HOPE has created job opportunities for over 300 young women through the Family Support Initiative (FSI). In Northern Nigeria, we are developing a HOPE Startup Kit, creating FSI Hubs across IDP camps, building business skills for female entrepreneurs, and facilitating community support.
