Health & Well-being
We believe that every child has the right to lead a healthy life - free from violence and stigma - and have access to the healthcare they deserve.
Together, we empower schools, families and communities to access expert knowledge and opportunities to improve the well-being of their children with disabilities.
There is a critical gap in healthcare for children in Africa.
Children with disabilities in remote areas face impassable barriers to healthcare, while girls burdened by period poverty are forced to miss school. Access to menstrual products, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, as well as reproductive health education and awareness to manage menstrual health remains a distant dream for many. This isn’t just about missed school days; it’s about the well-being of over 70 million people with disabilities – a thriving future depends on a healthy present. This work is successful through medical institutions, government partnerships, community-owned and inexpensive models.
To keep children with disabilities, girls and their families healthy so they can thrive in Africa, we’re bridging the healthcare gap and prioritizing equitable access to reproductive and menstrual health resources to empower girls, children and families – in schools and rural communities.
We understand that good health is essential for children to reach their full potential and this is why our programs address a broad range of needs, ensuring children have access to essential healthcare services and fostering a healthy lifestyle.
Empowering girls with reproductive health education and mental health support
One crucial area of focus is reproductive health education for girls. In addition to providing access to menstrual hygiene products and education, we empower these girls with the knowledge and tools to make these products themselves, ensuring girls have the ability to manage their health with dignity and confidence at any time. This promotes girls’ school attendance and overall participation in their communities.
Our innovative “Felicity Mobile Clinic” is a vital tool of our strategy. With the target to bring healthcare to the doorsteps of everyone, we utilize our mobile clinic to bring healthcare and testing directly to girls, children and families in remote areas, particularly those most vulnerable and lacking access to traditional healthcare facilities. This ensures even the most geographically isolated communities we serve, some of which have not seen a doctor in years, receive essential medical care.
Keeping children healthy so they can learn. We are improving the health of children through school-based community health.
At Hope for African Children, we champion access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in schools. This basic need is crucial for maintaining good health and preventing the spread of disease. By promoting hygiene practices, we create a healthier environment for learning and development.
Beyond physical health, Hope for African Children addresses mental well-being. We partner with local and international medical professionals from Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical Schools to provide mental health support and resources through medical missions. These medical missions staffed by doctors, student doctors, and specialists also tackle issues like cleft palate surgeries and congenital disabilities.
